How does Spray Tanning Work?

Spray Tanning is a temporary cosmetic procedure. Specially formulated tanning lotions which include DHA are applied by a spray tanning machine directly onto the skin.

The active ingredient of all tanning solutions is DHA or Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is not a dye or stain but works by causing a chemical reaction between itself, amino acids on the skin and oxygen. DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and has no known toxicity.

DHA was discovered in the 1920's when during medical tests it was found that with application skin turned a darker colour. It was listed with the Food & Drug Adminstration (FDA)  for cosmetic purposes in 1973 and has been used in cosmetic preparations since then.
